Privacy Policy

Abonten is a diaspora events platform operated by Akwaaba LLC ("we", "us", "our"). We help diaspora communities discover and share cultural events. Our website is abontenapp.com and our mobile apps are available on iOS and Android.

Account information: When you register, we collect your email address, display name, and password (stored as a bcrypt hash — we never see your plain password).

Profile information: City, bio, cultural community tags, TikTok/Instagram handles, and "here for" preferences — all optional and editable.

Event data: Events you create, including title, description, location, date, cover image URL, and ticket links.

Reactions: Which events you mark as Interested, Going, or Fire.

RSVPs: Your name and RSVP timestamp for private events you attend.

Push notification tokens: Device tokens to deliver event reminders and community notifications, linked to your account.

Technical data: IP address, device type, OS version, and app version collected automatically for security and debugging.

• To send OTP verification emails via Resend
• To send push notifications (event reminders, nearby events)
• To process payments for private event activation via Stripe
• To show you culturally relevant events based on your tags and city
• To improve the app and diagnose issues

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Public profile data (display name, cultural tags, events created) is visible to other Abonten users.

Event details you publish are visible to all users. Private events are only visible via your invite link.

Third-party processors we use:

• Stripe — payment processing (we do not store card numbers)
• Resend — transactional email (OTP, notifications)
• Expo / Apple / Google — push notification delivery
• Apple Sign In — optional authentication

We retain your account and event data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time by emailing hello@abontenapp.com. We will delete your account and associated personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law (e.g., payment records).

Our website uses minimal first-party cookies for session management. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking. The mobile app does not use cookies.

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data
• Object to or restrict processing
• Data portability

Abonten is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

We use industry-standard security practices including HTTPS, bcrypt password hashing, JWT authentication, and parameterized database queries. Our API server is hosted on DigitalOcean with restricted access. However, no system is perfectly secure — please use a strong, unique password and contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via the app or email. Continued use of Abonten after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
